So what is Multimedia?

Multimedia is a system of relaying information or entertainment that includes many different forms of communication. Multimedia might include video, audio clips, text and photographs or imagery. Some businesses may use a combination of graphics, sound and animation as a way to relay information or to aid in selling a product. This presentation of text, imagery, sound etc often has links and tools to aid in the transfer of information to assist the viewer to navigate, engage, create and learn.

Heres three examples:

1. ASOS - Is a clothing company who promote equality and diversity within the fashion world, selling clothing products for a wide and diverse variety of people of different shapes and sizes. Their website targets and promotes clothing towards a gender neutral society and offers over 30 sizes of clothing. They use text, still images and video to relay the information for the products that they sell, within a user friendly website layout including links to style tips and articles about fashion. By using large clear photographs of models of different ethnicity it clearly shows the audience that they are diverse. The large imagery of models allows the viewer to see the clothing clearly and the tool bars at the top allows the user to  search easily by breaking it down into areas. The use of multimedia creates a user friendly website which will aid in the sales of products and will help to attract a wide audience.

2. HERoines Inc - Is a website helping women young and old, through the sharing of information about talks, events, books and videos relating to women's issues. They use very large photographs of women across their site and use the colour pink and pastel colours to emphasise that this is a site specifically related to the female gender. The sections are clearly separated on the site into areas and there are links to web series videos, online challenges and blog posts which are found easily at the bottom of the page. By using big bold imagery it really emphasises that this site is all about women immediately on first arrival and the colour supports this.

3. Magnetic Ideals - Are a social enterprise collective running projects and providing support including networking, consultancy, research and training, for organisations and individuals working in the arts for community interest and social sustainability. From the offset you can see that the website is quite text and information based and would seem to target a purely adult audience due to the language and content of the site. It includes links to Archives and relevant videos on the subject area and also displays imagery and photographs. This use of multimedia seems to mainly want to educate and inform its users by having a large amount of written content regarding the subjects on the site.

So overall Multimedia is the best way to show information quickly and effectively when thought is put into several factors such as the colour theme, how the information is displayed such as layout and which medium it is, whether its video, sound or still images to make sure that it appeals to the target audience and displays the right thoughts and ideas for what is wanting to be transferred.
